Eyelid Inflammation

Blepharitis is the term for eyelid inflammation. While it will not cause permanent vision damage, it can be quite uncomfortable and unsightly and is a common contributor to dry eye disease.

Possible Causes of Blepharitis

  • Infection
  • Bacteria
  • Allergic reaction
  • Medications
  • Dandruff
  • Eyelid gland malfunction
  • Rosacea
  • Sleeping in makeup
  • Wearing makeup on the areas close to the eye

Symptoms of Blepharitis

  • Red eyes
  • Itchy eyes
  • Swollen eyes
  • Light sensitivity
  • Watery eyes
  • Misdirected eyelashes
  • Burning eyes

Treatment for Blepharitis

  • Antibiotics
  • Steroid creams or eye drops
  • Artificial tears
  • Treating or eliminating the external causes

In addition to these treatment options, the eye area should be regularly cleaned with a warm wet washcloth.
