The most common symptoms of dry eye syndrome are persistent dryness, an insatiable scratching, the feeling as if something is stuck in your eye, or a burning of the eyes. If you demonstrate any or all of these symptoms, you may require a measurement of the amount of tears in your eyes. This can easily be measured by a thin strip of filter paper placed at the edge of the eye.
There is no single cause for dry eye syndrome. Most often, dry eye syndrome occurs as the result of the aging process. In other cases, it can be the side effect of medication or just the result of living in a dry climate. An increasing number of patients are being diagnosed with dry eye syndrome as a result of staring at computer screens for extended periods of time.
Unfortunately, dry eye syndrome can never be fully cured. However, dry eye syndrome can be managed. Artificial tears are the most often prescribed solution. Restasis eyedrops is a new solution that helps your eyes increase tear production. However, the best treatment will depend on your individual needs.
