Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery (ReLACS)
Advances in cataract surgery technology have made it possible to perform cataract surgery incisions using a femtosecond laser, rather than a hand-held blade. At the Eye Care Center of Northern Colorado, we use the laser approach to cataract surgery for some patients to achieve outstanding cataract surgery results.
Prior to surgery, our doctors create a unique cataract surgery plan just for your eyes, using a sophisticated 3-D image of the eye to know the exact depth, width and location to make the incision. This step is called the capsulotomy and it gives the doctor access to the cataract lens so it can be softened and removed.
Advantages of Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery
- More accurate incisions
- Cataract is more easily removed
- Less chance of eye damage
- No ultrasound waves are needed to break up the lens
Not all patients are good candidates for laser-assisted cataract surgery. The only way to find out which technique is right for you is by scheduling a cataract consultation.
