It was reported on television that an article released in the Journal of the American Association Ophthalmology discussed COVID-19 infections and the eye.
The critical take away point stated in the article was that the conjunctivitis was most evident and severe in the sickest of patients.
The study results are very preliminary, and don’t contain much new information. They suggest that there might be transmission through the tears, so like all the public health recommendations state, avoid touching your face as much as possible.
If you are concerned about itchy, burning, red, irritated eyes, etc., unless you have significant fever, cough, and/or chest tightness, it is extremely unlikely that this has anything to do with COVID-19. Instead, you likely have dryness, allergies, or a mild viral conjunctivitis, which is treated with lubricating drops, over the counter allergy medicines, etc. This does not require an office visit. If you have significant concern, we can offer you a telemedicine exam to further evaluate and manage your symptoms. Please call our office at (303) 772-3300 to arrange.
