Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)
What is RLE?
Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is a refractive surgery that replaces the eye’s natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). RLE can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia (age-related close-up vision).
Refractive lens exchange (RLE) involves replacing the natural lens of the eye with an artificial one to improve vision. RLE surgery is similar to cataract surgery. Some people with early-stage cataracts may choose to have RLE instead of waiting for their cataracts to progress to the point where they need to be removed.
RLE services only performed at Longmont location
Who is a candidate for RLE?
An ideal candidate for RLE surgery is typically over 50, has early cataracts, and has good overall health without any eye diseases. RLE is also used for individuals who are not a good candidate for other refractive procedures such as LASIK, PRK, or ICL.
What takes place during a consultation?
During the consultation, we will conduct measurements of the cornea and refractive errors, pupil size, review medical history, and address any questions or concerns regarding RLE.
What will the day of surgery be like for a RLE procedure?
- You’ll arrive at our office (with a driver) at least 10 15 minutes before your appointment time. We will review paperwork and post-operative instructions, as well as verify that you have the necessary post operative medications.
- In preparation for your surgery, we will administer an IV to provide mild anesthesia for your procedure. Next, we will place anesthetic drops and dilate your eye or eyes. We’ll also place a sticky dot above the eye or eyes being treated, which we’ll use for reference during the procedure.
- When it’s time for the procedure to begin, you will enter the operating room. The nonoperative eye is covered to help you keep it still during the procedure. We will use a small device to keep your eyelids open, which helps you to avoid blinking during the procedure.
- Next, a stabilization ring is placed on the eye to immobilize it while the surgeon makes a small incision while looking through an operating microscope. There may be times during the procedure when your vision may temporarily go dark, or blurry or clear. This is quite normal, and we will make sure you feel informed about changes in your vision every step of the way.
- The natural lens is removed and replaced with the intraocular lens. The incision is closed and a protective shield is placed over the eye.
- You’re ready to head home, with your driver at the wheel. It’s best to rest and keep your eyes closed as much as possible for the first 12 hours, being careful not to rub or touch your eyes for 24 hours.
- The next day, you’ll have a follow-up appointment, as well as additional required postoperative visits to ensure that the healing process is going well. Usually, there is no postoperative pain, and vision will start to improve within a week
What can I realistically expect after RLE surgery?
Initially, your vision will be blurry, but as you heal your vision will improve. It may take up to a month to achieve your best results. About 80% of patients end up with 20/40 vision or better.
