Diabetic Eye Disease Treatment Justin M Kanoff, MD Video Transcript

Diabetes can affect your eye in a lot of different ways; it can cause bleeding in the back of the eye, it can cause swelling in the back of the eye, and both of these can work together to unfortunately rob patients of their vision. The good news in the field of retina is we have fantastic treatments for diabetic eye disease. One of the most common problems is leaking in the back of the eye from blood sugars being too high. We are able to treat that with injections of medication inside the eye, which are able to restore those blood vessels to normal function, keep the leaking to a minimum and hopefully restore vision. We are also able to stop bleeding in the back of the eye through lasers. Sometimes if the disease progresses past the ability of medical treatment, we have to proceed to surgery as well.
